The history of Theo & Stacy’s restaurants dates back to the year 1973. Theo Skartsiaris, who immigrated to the United States from a small village in southern Greece, began a restaurant business with his brothers in Flushing, New York, in 1969. When he married Stacy, also a native of Greece, the couple began to look for a smaller community to move to in hopes of fulfilling the American dream they left their home country for. Having visited Kalamazoo once, Theo realized this was an ideal environment to raise a family – warm, friendly people, good schools, and an interest in Greek food and culture! The couple moved here and bought a small restaurant on W. Michigan Avenue in downtown Kalamazoo, and thus Theo & Stacy’s was the first restaurant to introduce Greek food to the Kalamazoo area. A few years later, Stacy’s two sisters, Phyllis and Tessie, moved to Kalamazoo with their husbands to join Theo and Stacy and expand the restaurant business. The family opened two more restaurants, one on Westnedge Ave. (1982) and one on Portage Rd. (1984). To give thanks to the community for welcoming and supporting the family, Theo and Stacy began offering free Thanksgiving dinners to the poor and needy of our city in 1977. Although Theo passed on in 1994, Stacy continues this tradition to this day. All three restaurants are still run by the owners themselves – Stacy, Tessie, Phyllis, Elliot, and George – who invite you to come enjoy their rich Greek heritage of fine food and hospitality.
