Our building, completed in 1879, was the first building in the United States owned and built by a women’s organization as a club house and was also used as a community library. The LLA was organized in January 1852, grew out of a reading club started in 1844. It was the first women’s organization in Michigan and the third in the nation. The building is on the Michigan Register of Historic Places, the LLA is a Kalamazoo Historic district, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. One of the stated purposes of the Club is to preserve and maintain this historical building so that it will continue to be a source of pride to future generations. We are also actively involved in promoting literacy and education. In 2005, LLA inaugurated its college scholarship program. Each year college scholarships are awarded to selected Kalamazoo county high school graduates. We contribute thousands of dollars each year to a variety of local, state, national, and international organizations in support of their humanitarian efforts.
